Stop Victim Blaming

We need to understand that rape is not about what the woman was/wasn't wearing, how drunk she was/wasn't or how "far" she had previously gone with her rapist; rape is simply an abuse of power. If it was simply about how women dressed, then there would be no rapes in countries like Afghanistan and Iran, where women wear the burqua. Similarly, there would be no rape in these countries as alcohol is not allowed in Islam. This mindset of victim blaming takes the onus away from the rapist, who makes the conscious decision to rape.

I agree completely! Rape isn't about sex, it's about control and sex is the tool used to achieve control. Victim blaming has got to stop! The only person at fault is the rapist, period. I've had the discussion with my counselor and it appears to me that people choose to blame the victim because in some ways it makes them feel ok, like it can't happen to them or their loved ones. It's wrong, but the question is.. How do we change society's perception?
